QUESTION POSED ON: 05 May 2005
I cannot open the Group Policy snap-in in Windows Server 2000, as it comes up with the following messages (for both Default Domain Policy and Default Domain Controllers Policy): "Failed to open the Group Policy Object. You may not have appropriate rights" and "System cannot find the path specified." I'm using an administrator account, which is a member of Domain and Enterprise Admins and Group Policy Creator Owners, so I don't think permission is the problem! Can you suggest any reason why my Default Domain Policies can't be found? Thanks.

EXPERT RESPONSE
This can occur if there is a problem with Active Directory, such as one of the necessary services is stopped, replication is being prevented or time synchronization fails. It can also occur if you are unable to log on to the DC and are instead using cached credentials. To determine what the problem is I'd look for problems in DNS and in Active Directory. You can read more about Active Directory troubleshooting in my free Active Directory security booklet and also in the articles at Microsoft.com, such as the one here and here.
