QUESTION POSED ON: 08 August 2005
We have a Windows 2000 domain and all workstations are running Windows 2000 Professional. We keep a folder on a central server with user rights assigned to the users as read and write. We do not want them to copy the files on to their systems, but they need to be able to access and work on the files. How can I restrict file copy?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Currently this functionality is not available directly in Windows, or at least I don't know of a way to do this. Perhaps another reader will contact me. Indirectly, you'd need to set permissions on the vast majority of the local file system to read-only, which is a non-trivial task.
