QUESTION POSED ON: 17 August 2005
How can I prevent users from deleting files or folders from the shared folder on NTFS? Which rights should I give on sharing->permissions and the Security tab?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
You shouldn't give any rights on the Sharing->Permissions tab -- those control just the share. What you want are the more granular NTFS rights available on the Security tab.

To prevent deletes for a specific user or group:

  1. Go to the Advanced button on the Security tab
  2. Click the Add button and type in the name of the user or group
  3. On the ensuing list of permissions, deny the Delete permission
