QUESTION POSED ON: 22 September 2005
How can I keep a flat file secure in a Windows XP environment? I tried zipping the file and encrypting, but I don't know how to open up such a file using FileReader in Java.

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
The best way to keep files secure in an NT-kernel environment is through the use of NTFS permissions. You'll need to establish an account with appropriate privileges such that FileReader can open the file under a limited security context while keeping anonymous and other users out. For more information on NTFS permissions and accounts, check out this guide to them at www.pcguide.com or see Chapter 3 of my book, Learning Windows Server 2003.
