GFI Software's GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner is a vulnerability scanning, patch management and auditing tool.
GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner (N.S.S.) is a network vulnerability management product that allows you to scan, detect, assess and remediate security vulnerabilities on your network.
The product scans the entire network, performs more than 15,000 vulnerability assessments and identifies possible security threats. The complete vulnerability assessment database includes standards such as Open Vulnerability and Assessment Language (OVAL) with 2,000+ checks and SANS Top 20.
GFI LANguard N.S.S. performs multi-platform scans (Windows, Mac OS, Linux) across all environments and analyzes your network's security health from a single data source. When a scan is complete, GFI LANguard N.S.S. has tools for installing and managing patches on all machines across different OS platforms and in 38 languages.
GFI LANguard also allows auto-downloads of missing patches as well as patch rollback. Custom software can also be deployed.
GFI LANguard N.S.S. 8.0 can now import and check OVAL definitions . The OVAL standard helps define the tests used to determine whether a system has weaknesses. MITRE -- the organization responsible for creating the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures, or CVE, list -- also maintains OVAL. Through this implementation, GFI LANguard will have more than 2,000 new vulnerability checks.
Features in patch management include:
Added support to rollback Microsoft patches.
Added patches auto-download -- a new module that handles automatic download of Microsoft updates according to user settings. Its activity can be checked from a new tab of the status monitor.
An optimized missing patches detection engine considerably reduces RAM use.
Files in different languages are automatically downloaded once they are set in program updates.
Warnings sent to users when a remote machine does not have Windows Installer 3 installed. (Windows Installer 3 is necessary in order to deploy correctly some of the patches.)
Security scanner optimizations.
Support for a variable number of scanning threads was added to GFI LANguard N.S.S. 8.0. In GFI LANguard N.S.S. 7.0 and previous versions, users were limited to three threads during scans. Starting from GFI LANguard N.S.S. 8.0, users can configure even more threads to fully exploit their hardware and network infrastructure's potential.
Scheduled scan enhancements. Scheduled scans have been enhanced for laptops and other mobile devices. GFI LANguard N.S.S. 8.0 keeps track of computers that are not scanned and scans as soon as they become available on the network.
System requirements: Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2), 2003, Vista operating system; Internet Explorer 5.1 or higher; Client for Microsoft Networks component included by default in Windows 95 or higher ; Secure Shell (SSH) this is included by default in every Linux OS distribution pack.
