Antivirus giant Symantec Corp. announced today it will acquire instant messaging security firm IMlogic Inc.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, according to a report on TheStreet.com, Framingham, Mass-based research firm IDC estimates that Symantec is paying between $20 and $30 million.

As part of the acquisition, IMlogic's threat detection and remediation services for IM will be integrated into Symantec's portfolio of security offerings. The move is also intended to augment Symantec Security Response, its worldwide security research effort.

Enrique Salem, Symantec's senior vice president of security products and solutions, said in a prepared statement that the purchase will enhance Symantec customers' security and archiving capabilities by allowing them to better manage all their messaging requirements, particularly when it comes to compliance.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Symantec has partnered with IMlogic for some time. The two have worked together on IM security products, and Symantec's researchers have conducted joint efforts with the IMlogic Threat Center.

Plus, Symantec's Enterprise Vault, the e-mail and content archiving product it acquired as part of its 2004 purchase of Veritas Software Inc., has been integrated with IMlogic's IM Manager since 2002.

A spokesperson said employee layoffs are not expected at Symantec or Waltham, Mass.-based IMlogic as a result of the deal.

Symantec aims to complete the acquisition by March.
